They are a nuisance to cut,especially when you get old,as the go like pieces of bone that you more or less have to get a hammer and chisel to!
Can anybody tell me what useful purpose they serve?

Rip them all off and then see how agonising it is to walk. It's something to do with pressure. Same way that it really hurts/is impossible to grip something without fingernails.

If you're Colin Potts they're for painting pink and skipping round the living room to 'it's raining men' to..... Probably
