DCFC win in style
DCFC 6 vs 0 Whitby Wanderers
DCFC, supporters of Unibond-hopeful Chester FC, played host to the supporters of Unibond Premier League side Whitby Wanderers on 27th March 2010.
Having beaten Buxton FC another supporters team from the Unibond Premier in the last home game DCFC were hoping to make it a unibond double over their east-coast rivals.
The game started brightly for DCFC who had an opportunity two minutes into the game when a cross from Allen Jones towards Andrew Evans was blocked by the Whitby centre back who inadvertently smashed the ball against his own cross bar and down (according to striker Ephgrave) over the line. The ref and his assistants however did not give the goal.
In truth DCFC were dominating from the off, something they had failed to do in previous games. Andrew Evans hit the side netting and Allen Jones fired over with Dolan better placed as DCFC searched for the first goal.
That goal finally did come mid-way through the 1st half, in somewhat scrappy fashion. Evans, Ephgrave and Allen Jones all had efforts blocked by either defenders or the goalkeeper before Dolan finally lashed the ball home for 1-0.
The goal seemed to spark Whitby into life and they almost immediately hit back. their No.4, playing in attack, took advantage of a mix up between captain Darlington and the returning Gary Dutton to race clear. Jay Gardner was swiftly off his line to narrow the angle and force the striker into pushing his shot wide.
Whitby had a further chance to level when their other striker, the No.16 cut in from the left before unleashing a fierce shot which went just over the bar.
DCFC extended their lead on the 40 minute mark through Allen Jones. Ephgrave held the ball in attack before laying off to Holliday who delicately chipped a ball between centre back and right back for the advancing Jones, who slotted home despite an acute angle.
HT 2-0
The second half saw DCFC more dominant. The message at half time was to attack from the off and get the killer 3rd goal. DCFC had a corner approximately 5 minutes into the half after the Whitby defence had been to casual allowing Evans and Ephgrave to force the corner. Jones took the resulting Corner which found Dolan, his initial header was blocked, however he reacted quickest to prod home his 2nd of the game and 9th of the season.
The 4th goal for DCFC was not long in the waiting. Andy Holliday robbed the ball in midfield before advancing onto the defenders, he then struck a fierce shot which arrowed into the goalkeepers top right hand corner, giving him no chance from fully 30 yards. A contender for goal of the season (no bias)
DCFC were really starting to enjoy themselves but the strikers were guilty of being too greedy at times. Allen Jones was quick to apologise when firing over when Dolan was screaming for the pass for his hat-trick and Holliday robbed the ball in similar fashion to his goal but could not emulate the strike when Ephgrave was well-placed.
DCFC did have a 5th after 75 minutes. Ephgrave was again the provider for Holliday who's powerful strike was stopped by the 'keeper. The 'keeper however in making the fine save pushed the ball out to the feet of Jones who had a simple finish.
Whitby did have a chance in the 2nd half when their midfielder was felled just outside the box. The somewhat un-tested Gardner however pulled off a fine save from the free-kick pushing the effort over the bar
Mark Ephgrave got his name on the scoresheet, turning well to fire home from the edge of the box.
In the final minutes DCFC continued to push, Holliday had an effort hit the post and in the final minute Dolan had a glorious chance for his hat-trick as his header was cleared off the line. The hat-trick mask remained in his pants at the final whilstle.
