Been watching Dispatches tonight. They were investigating the fact that many of 11 year olds move on to high school without a basic grasp of maths. As part of the program, they gave 150 primary school maths teachers a quiz.

Only one of them got 100%, most got around the 50% mark. And these are the people teaching the kids how to pass this test!

Anyway, the quiz above is a shortened version.

I passed my 11+ but spent most of the time in wide eyed bewilderment whilst answering the questions. I got 8/14

English was always my thing anyway!

Oh, and be fair, don't be a tool and use a calculator; the only person you're lying to is yourself!

It took me three attempts to pass GCSE Maths.

13/14. Got the first one wrong as I was being a dope

I only got 8/14 as well. Back when I was 11, I would have done better - had no idea how to do the prism calculation. I did get O level maths, so I expect I would have known once. biggrin.gif

I got 13/14 because I got the stupid clock angle degrees wrong. Bah! Good test though - but I reckon as a kid I would have got barely half right. I took 2 minutes short of the time allowed.

Anyone tell me what the last answer was? If it's 150cm, then I got all 14 correct, but I stepped away for a moment to put my coat on and the timer ran out by the time I got back. The last few were a bit more testing, but most of it was pretty basic - there weren't any nasty fractions to deal with really, the numbers all divided quite cleanly for most questions.

It was 150cm, think you had to answer it as 1.5m though

12 out of 14. Got the first one wrong... I did the calculation the wrong way round... and got one of the "crossword" questions wrong by not reading the question properly. I knew the answer, just put the wrong figure in...

I was appalling at maths, saying that, I still am.
