I know someone who dropped their iPod in a swimming pool, and after a few days (4/5) in a nice warm airing cupboard it came back to life.
Think they popped off the back cover and removed the battery first, although it might work without.
A washing machine is probably worse with all the movement/heat, although they don't tend to use all that much water.

Like any electronic device accidentally submerged, let it dry out for several days then try it again.
Worst think I ever left in my pockets and washed was my car keys. Took ages to find them again too.

Stuck my ipod nano through the washing machine AND tumble dryer a few weeks back.
2 days on the radiator and a new charge and it was good as new!
Also dropped my phone down the bog (pre-p**s thankfully) and that worked after a few days on the radiator as well.

Sure it was a goldfish? You might have a Squeaker in your pond!
Just goes to show it's always a good idea to check your pockets before bunging stuff into the washing machine. I've never had an electronic disaster (touch wood), but one of the worst things for me has been when someone has left tissues in a pocket. They disintegrate into little pieces and then stick to everything

Which type of iPod is it? I'd guess that the Classic ones with hard drives would take less kindly to a bashing around the washing machine than the solid state Nano or Shuffle. Drying stuff out for a few days before trying to turn it on again does seem to work with that sort of thing quite often.

have a bigger problem with my eldests I pod touch.
The original Pc it was paired with was binned off and and she forgot her new pass word and after trying
different passwords the thing has locked up.
it wont allow my PC to accept it to go back to factory settings as its not its original docking point.
So she is now stuck with a very nice bit of glass and plastic which will do Nowt.
Might try the old freezer trick to see if that works but looks like its now only fit for the bin.

You should be able to link to another computer, but you'll loose all the music on the iPod which will be replaced by the music in the new computers library. There are 3rd party applications (non-Apple) that will let you transfer the music off the iPod first so you can load it onto the new computer.
