Our ISP have emailed me about some emergency maintenance which will be taking place tonight sometime after 11pm. The email is long, almost Vaughan-esque in fashion as it explains in detail why it is Cisco's fault and not theirs.

Anyway the upshot of it is that there will be loss of connectivity to the server for about 45 minutes whilst a router at the datacentre is patched with some new software.

Keeps cutting off tonight

Ongoing problems at the datacentre with a dodgy router. The upgrade above did NOT go according to plan.

There's a thirty page thread about it here. ohmy.gif

Is there anyone near Maidenhead with a spare Netgear?

You'd think they'd have backup routers and stuff to cover software upgrades and maintenance downtime, even if it meant a reduced service to customers.

Yes its a major cock-up by them. The datacentre claim they do have redundant networking but clearly it has not functioned as advertised.

The whole sorry saga has now made it on to The Register.

Definitely karma after they spammed the entire Poundhosting client list following a gaff by Poundhosting who sent out an email a few days earlier and cc'd their entire client email list to everyone else.

Just received this, network upgrade work from 4pm - 6pm on Wednesday 14th October. It should not cause an outage but there is a risk that it may do.

QUOTE
We will be performing maintenance which will put your service in an at risk period. This will last about 60 minutes, and during this time, your service is running at a higher risk of interruption if a failure occurs.

This maintenance is to improve the network and is necessary under our program for increasing the reliability and redundancy of the network.

This maintenance is not expected to cause any outage.

We apologize for the inconvenience and welcome any feedback.

Thank you,
Future Hosting Engineering

More downtime notified, this time for a kernel upgrade on the parent server of our VPS. (Think of it a bit like a Windows service pack but for proper computers). They are also whacking in some extra memory too.

The upgrade will commence at around midnight on Saturday evening and is expected to take about 45 minutes. DC will be unavailable during this time.
