OK Folks, a Eureka moment.
The problem was being caused due to the indexing used on the database. This worked OK under normal usage, but anytime anyone did a search, the database software used up all the resources allocated due to the size of the database now. This meant the search was slow, and no-one else could do anything until the search was completed, which could take several minutes in some cases.
I've changed the indexing now.
The result of this is that searches are now blisteringly fast and should not cause the database to hang whilst searches are being performed.
Onwards and upwards.

It is indeed, haven't used it much lately becuase it would take something ridiculous like 15 minutes to do one, it's speedy now though.
