MASTERS TOUR 2008
This summer Masters Football is touring around the UK, and Deva Chat FC have arranged a game against the legends.
Masters football is an indoor football competition for former professional footballers, who represent a senior club for which they played. The games are covered by SKY Sports and are extremely popular with fans with whom it has gained cult status.
This summer, however, Masters is taking a new direction. Whilst the usual format will continue during the season, the month of June will play host to the first ever Masters tour. The Masters tour will see legends from the competition face amateur sides such as ourselves. There will be four Masters teams in all, each playing five games each - 20 games overall.
Because of the reputation of Masters Football, there was always going to be a high level of interest from teams wanting to play. To chose the teams the legends would face, the amateur teams first had to apply to be entered into a draw. From that draw, 200 applicants were chosen and asked to submit a small essay on the story of their team, and why they should be chosen to face one of the Masters teams.
These applications would then be considered by representatives from Masters Football including directors, players and referees before a final 20 teams were chosen. Yesterday, Chatters boss Nath Auty received an email to say that his application had impressed the judges so much that we had been chosen to face one of the Masters sides.
The full details are not confirmed as yet, but we are scheduled for a game on the 22nd June. So far, several players have signed up to the scheme including Chester's interim assistant manager Paul Butler, a former Leeds, Wolves and Sunderland defender. Others include Ian Rush, Glenn Hoddle, Alan Kennedy, Mark Hughes, John Barnes, Phil Neal, Gus Poyet, Dennis Wise and Ally McCoist.
Auty said he would use the opportunity for some fund-raising.
“I can’t believe it really” he admitted.
“I never thought we’d actually win a place when I entered, so it’s amazing. Obviously I had to keep it quiet from the rest of the squad, but it's a nice little surprise for them!"
“The lads are going to be really up for it and it’ll be good to play against Paul (Butler) if he is in the team that we play - maybe he might call some of our players up to the first team!"
