I've tried another config tweak tonight and will leave it for a few days to see if it makes a difference. If not I'll install some monitoring scripts to automatically bring the board back up and/or reboot the server when there is a crash to at least improve on any downtime.
Long term though we may need to look at a higher spec'd hosting option.

Could always make it pay-per-post. That'd stop a lot of spamming although it would cost Mancot a fortune!

After two crashes this evening I've decided to scrap that last config change.

No, it started about two weeks ago. I blamed Sudoku at first as it started happening around the time I installed it but even after removing it still no improvement.
I've got a script running every 5 minutes now to check that apache is running and give it a kick up the backside if it isn't.

You have already lost me!!!!!!!
As long as its not our "friends" .

No it's not our friends. If anything it is that bloody googlebot and its yahoo partner in crime who seem to spend more and more time indexing the contents of the board for search engines.
For those who have got a clue what I'm talking about I might try another script to swap around two versions of robots.txt so they can only index the site during the night.
Edit: Don't think they react quickly enough to changes for that to work.

Shame on you Waz.hope you washed yourself with bleach mate......or a rancid pint at the once great Peacock!
Krankie....have you fixed the problem as eveything now seems ok????????
Can you answer my question about Firefox2 please?
krankie
Jul 4 2007, 06:11 AM
The problem hasn't been fully fixed but there's now a job running every 5 minutes to automatically recover from any crash so downtime should be much more limited.
With regards to upgrading to Firefox 2, yes you should go ahead with this. You won't notice any major change in functionality or the user interface, however you should still upgrade regularly to make sure you are fully up to date with security patches.
