Five members of the Deva Chat FC squad joined forces to represent Manchester in the James Dixon Memorial Trophy tournament, held in The People's Republic of Upton-by-Chester on Saturday.
The national football tournament, organised by British Telecom, was planned in order to raise money for the Cystic Fybrosis Trust in memory of former BT colleague and Chester City supporter James Dixon, who sadly passed away four years ago.
The competition, which was arranged into two groups of four with the winner of each group contesting an overall final, was attended by BT representative teams from around the country. The Manchester team, which the DCFC group represented, was joined by three sides from Chester, and one of each from Preston and Birmingham. Chester's Dee 106.3 team filled the eighth place.
Deva Chat FC player, BT employee and housewives favourite Alan Hitchin called upon four of his team-mates to fill in for the Manchester side at short notice and they didn't disappoint, lifting the trophy after a hard-fought final against one of the three Chester representatives. After 20 minutes of deadlock, in which DCFC/Manchester should have put the game beyond doubt with a host of squandered opportunities, the match entered a penalty shoot-out. Deva Chat trio Mark Ephgrave, Joe Cartwright and captain Robbie Cartwright all converted, before the opposition's final spot-kick struck the face of the post ending the shoot-out 5-4.
DCFC/Manchester had topped their group courtesy of a goalless draw with Dee 106.3, a 1-0 success against the Birmingham team and a much-needed 2-0 win over Preston - ensuring a top finish and a final place by virtue of ONE goal, having finished level on points with Dee 106.3. The much-needed second goal arrived courtesy of Manchester's forward-cum-final goalkeeper Roberto Costello.
