Can someone explain to me why I have to log in each day to Devachat now. It used to remember who I was!

Thank you cityscarf.gif
AndyHa
That was happening to me after I upgraded to the lastest Internet Explorer. I changed to Firefox and all is OK now.
North London Blue
Ahhh, I do have the new Internet Explorer, perhaps that is it.

Anyone know another way around this?
Sorry to go on about it, but it is annoying.
Crazy Badger
Done it to me the last two days and I'm using Firefox 1.5

IE7 is bad - Microsoft are going to loose significant market share as people switch
North London Blue
Sorry Mods, this should probably be moved to 'Off Topic' but can someone explain to me about Firefox and why I might change to it if, as it seems, IE7 has these problems.

I have heard other rumblings from other sources as well.

Cheers
Colin Potts
Done it to me as well

This could escalate into a potential resignation issue. mad.gif

Mods. Please sort. NOW

It's just a straight forward alternative, which works in a very similar way to IE6 but allows the use of tab browsing found in IE7. You may find a very small number of sites which work better with IE but for these just use IE - you can't actually remove IE from Windows anyway, so it's always going to be there as a back up.

Stop using IE - start using Firefox today!
Ben
Better still get a Mac and use Safari smile.gif

It's been doing it to me for weeks - my work laptop seems to remember who I am from session to session but the home PC doesn't. I've assumed it's some sort of cookie setting that's been altered somewhere but I've never bothered to look. It is a bit annoying having to log back in every visit, though.

Dunno about IE7, but in IE6's Internet Options there's an option for automatically deleting Temporary Internet Files on closure of the browser.

Choose Tools/Internet Options... then in the Advanced tab scroll down to Security and you may find that the Empty Temporary Internet Files when browser is closed function ticked. Removing the tick should stop IE from deleting DevaChat's cookie every time you shut down the application.

Update: Just tried it on my system and it seemed to do the trick.

I am guessing that this is a board issue rather than IE.

I'm still using IE6 (haven't dared upgrade to IE7 yet). I have to log in about twice a week because DC has forgotten whom I am. crying.gif

I thought having to log in all the time was a punishment for not being constructive!Nice to know I'm not alone. wink.gif

Thanks for that - unfortunately it isn't ticked on my IE7.
Any other possibilities?

Nice to know I am not alone on this one!

I've got IE7 and it's not ticked on mine either. However , it seems to be an intermittent problem as sometimes I'm still logged in sometimes not!

Welcome to the world of macs, I have had mine for about 4 months now and although I have Windows XP installed onto my imac too i hardly use it now!

Anyway back to your question, if you have an intel imac then you have a very fast wireless card installed, I would suggest you go and get a wireless network router.
Crazy Badger
Hahaha - Windows installed on a Mac - sort of defeats the object don't you think?

And proves the point that the PC is still, and will always be, king.

Still makes me laugh when they advertise them with "intel inside" biggrin.gif

There speaks somebody who hasn't used a mac. I actually got the Imac for its video editing facilities, it comes with software way ahead of any amateur software on the PC (Ok so you can spend hundreds on professional software but I didnt need to!!). I initally thought that I would just use OS X for this and I would use XP for everything else. But as soon as you start to use OS X you realise how far advanced it is than XP, its never crashed and things just "work" first time. No virus's, no registry to b****r up! Vista is only just catching up to OS X by copying most of the features, but Apple has a new release soon!

Anyway now I hardly ever boot into XP, as im sure Charfield Blue will find in due course!

The login requests are caused by a new security feature in the current version of the forum software.

This links your login cookie to your IP address to scupper session hijacking attempts. Unfortunately it means whenever your IP address changes you will be prompted to login again. Those using routers won't notice much difference but if you are still on a USB broadband modem or dial-up, then you are likely to be prompted to login each time you disconnect and reconnect to the internet.
Crazy Badger
Spent lots of time playing with Macs and whilst there are plenty of things they do ok, there are lots more things they don't! OS X might be the better option for someone who doesn't really know what they are doing as it's simple to use and update, it's not a patch on Windows XP if you have a reasonable level of IT literacy. My systems don't crash, they do everything first time, I don't get viruses and have no registry problems.

The fact is, if you have to put Windows on a Mac, you really shouldn't have bought a Mac in the first place wink.gif

As for the thread issue, I'm connecting through a router and have a fixed IP address, but find myself having to log in every day when it used to remember my username and password, so I don't think that's the problem.

Like I said I would have agreed with this until I started using one. As for Windows being stable if you know what your doing, Im an Engineer with plenty of IT experience but Windows is just not as stable as OS X, or other systems such as Linux/UNIX. You speak to people who REALLY know IT what they would rather build a system around, Windows or the alternatives and I think you will find the mass majority will stear away from Windows. In fact I have known companies when writing specs will have as a requirement that windows ISNT used! Its too buggy and open to attack.

I've upgraded the forum software to version 2.2.2.

The release notes for the upgrade mentions that it includes a fix to login problems which sound similar to those detailed here, so hopefully those affected will notice an improvement.
