Forever Bury FC B 1-5 Chester City
21 October 2006, Friendly
Report by Neil Crossley
This was the first proper game for the new-look B team under the management of Dave Crossley, and although the scoreline may suggest otherwise, it was a promising performance for a group of players that were unaccustomed to each other. It is credit to Wozza that he managed to arrange this game (after the Rhyl disappointment), and it will have done the team a world of good to have played another fans team rather than a local side.
Rossy managed to overcome umpteen injuries and returned from Australia where he was being pushed about in a trolley (or something), and started the game in net. Captain Tesco was only just fit to play after spewing up in the changing rooms prior to kick off. He was joined at the back by Paul and Ste, and the B teams bad boy Kezmoz (hes been banned from the message board for a year, which will probably be a good thing!). Fellow banned message board member Josh Cowen played on the left wing with Paddy, Anton and Whittle packing the midfield. Benty and Neil started up front, so it was a pacy attacking line that faced a Chester side who had played four previous games.
The Bury fans had the best of the opening exchanges, putting some nice football together and managing to put some decent attacks together. Neil quickly dropped back into defence, pushing Anton up front and Paul into the middle. Tesco was forced to retire as his illness took hold. Then it all started to go wrong. Chester grabbed a goal and started getting into the game a lot more. Rossy pulled off some excellent saves to cap a man of the match performance, but couldnt keep the scoreline down and Chester went on to score five, including one with a debatable offside decision that went their way. It could have been more but for a frenetic goal line scramble that saw the ball cleared off the line about five times.
It wasnt all Chester, though. In the second half, the Bury fans had a spell of excellent attacking football that had the visitors completely on the back foot. Kezmoz had a few chances and hit the post with a header, Benty used his strength to get round the defenders and forced some good saves from a decent-looking Chester keeper, who also saved Neils forty-yard effort. Substitute Connor looked impressive when he came on up front, and he gave Forever Bury a fighting chance when he fired a close range effort into the roof of the net after a good cross.
The Bury fans couldnt keep this up however, and Chester were able to finish the game comfortably, scoring their fourth and fifth goals to put any hopes of a Bury fight back to bed.
It was an entertaining match that showed lots of promise for the fledgling B team, who will surely improve as the games go on and they get to know each others style of play better. The game was probably closer than the scoreline suggests, but the important thing is that everyone enjoyed playing their football, and are all ready to go out next time and put up even more of a battle.
