Where to start then? Solihull are bottom but it won’t be an easy test at all. Although Marcus will be up for it against his old club, I wouldn’t be surprised if we witness another disappointment, but it can go either way. This is the first of our ‘crucial’ group of fixtures and I really hope we win, but to surprise a few, it could be a hiding. I am going to upset the odds and predict a defeat, which may be the opposite to my usual outcome.
On New Years’ Day, we got hammered 3-0 by Solihull. Could history repeat itself? I really hope not 🙂.
Come On You Blues!
Score: Chester FC 0-3 Solihull Moors
Attendance: 1,498 (106 Solihull Moors)

A bit like ourselves, they’ve made a few signings recently, so they’ll probably play better than their league position suggests they will. Don’t care if it’s 1-0, or 6-5, let’s win tomorrow!

There's been more snow overnight, between a dusting to about an inch, or in metric, between 3mm(!) and 25mm. It's snowing lightly right now, and sleet is forecast on and off for most of the day. On the plus side the temperature is above freezing. The pitch will be wet underfoot but should be playable.

Big game today, try and get to the ground to support the lads cityscarf.gif

I don’t believe he is under pressure at all, what would be the point of changing the manager again? We are still going to have the same players and financial pressure, whoever came in.

Team: Hornby, Jones, Astles, Anderson, Hall-Johnson, Dawson, Halls, Rowe-Turner, James, Akintunde, Udoh.
Subs: Lynch, Hannah, Bell, Shaw, Mahon.

I see six teams scored four goals today in the National League smile.gif .
For two of the teams it wasn't sufficient to get a win!
At this point I think we'll settle for wins, however achieved.

This wasn’t a classic at all, but today’s win is MASSIVE. It was a scrappy game with a bit of spice in it, although it was rather poor. Anyway, onto the positives. Given the circumstances, James Jones was terrific. He stepped up to the plate really well, and thoroughly deserved the clean sheet. Also, Sam Hornby deserved his clean sheet too. I thought that it was about time that Alex Lynch was dropped, and so he was today. Sam is a tall goalkeeper which is good for us, and dealt with his crosses well. I thought that his kicking was quite good too. Our performance was quite gritty today, however the result in the end is absolutely essential. As long as we can start to win games, then we don’t half have a fighting chance.

This win wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for our outstanding volunteers. I arrived at 12:00, but there was already a lot of people working extremely hard. Some of the people who took part included our very own CEO, chronicle sports reporters, media officers, as well as many more hardy souls. Once again, a great win for us, and let’s hope we can kick-on in this crucial period. Come On You Blues!

I was clearing the snow off the pitch for a good 2 hours, along with our incredible volunteers. It paid off in the end.

In his post match interview and talking of Ross Hannah, the assistant manager said that 'they'd had to make some big decisions this week, including Ross Hannah'. Interesting remark. Anyone know what these big decisions were?

It wasn’t a good game and we weren’t great or even good but let’s look at the positives:

1. Clean sheet
2. Goalkeeper looked confident and assured.
3. We blooded a new Centre-half Anderson who looked thoroughly competent
4. Reece Hall Johnson was back. We have a prospect of width.
5. Tom Shaw played 45 minutes giving the prospect of speeding up our otherwise pedestrian midfield.
6. Mahon was on the bench.
7. Andy Hall was taken off at half time
8. Marcus seems to have reached the conclusion that playing the plodding and mistake-prone McCombe with Astles isn’t going to work . Did John McCarthy not learn that lesson from the Hudson/Astles combination last season?
9. To solve the lack of defensive pace he introduced James Jones who is a seriously quick Centre-half and who had a fine
Game. He’s one of our own and if he keeps playing as well he could be a real combination with Astles.
10. If we get Gough and Archer back, I think we’re a wide player away from having a proper team.
11. We may have to discard all of John McCarthy’s summer signings but it’s hard to think of one that’s come off.

Excellent result from a young team, Jones a brilliant first game and a prospect for the future without doubt, we looked so much better with the overlapping fullback. Good confident goalkeeper giving the defence assurance, and a great performance from Ryan Astles, again! MOM for me.
Solihull were out to spoil, resulting in a poor game, not helped by the totally inept officials, where do they get them from!
I’m totally convinced that most of them have never played the game!
A big plus for the crowd support for the team, it DOES make a difference!

Agree with all 10 points you make.

I was very impressed with James Jones, and as the new keeper didn't have much to do he did everything that was asked of him very confidently. Yesterday was a must win and we did it.

Interesting match report on the Solihull Moors website, “Smash and grab by Chester”. Apparently they were all over us.
