A tale of Free Kicks as DCFC beaten
Monday 31st August 2009 Stockport 2 DCFC 0 Two Free kicks did for DCFC as Stockport came out on top in a game which DCFC could argue they dominated. Returning Manager Andy Holliday took a 13 man squad to stockport's Platt lane Pitch to play stockport before travelling to Altrincham to watch the city match. DCFC's squad did not include any of the 1st choice central defenders including captain matthew darlington, through absence and injury. The reshuffled back 3 saw David Round, captain for the day Steven Mace and Andrew Wall line up together. The midfield was also hit by absences with David Thomson stepping into the breach for an injured Thomas Vickers, alongside Robert Cartwright, Joseph Cartwright, Andy Holiiday and daniel watling. Up front, on form Ash Dolan replaced Ephgrave to partner andrew evans in attack. The first half started well with Stockport unable to really get going and DCFc finding joy on the right. The first shot on goal came from Thomson who brought the ball down before turning onto his weaker left side to shoot. In fairness, the goalkeeper gathered up his weak shot. It was a signal of things to come however as Thomson, again involed, scissor kicked a ball out to robert cartwright on the right, who's drilled shot was again well saved by the 'keeper. Daniel Watling had a similiar chance after being put through by Joe cartwright, however the 'keeper was equal to his effort and pushed the shot around the post. Stockport finally breached the DCFC defence after their No.3 found himself in the area after passing Round, however, when well positioned he pulled his shot horribly wide. Stockport, who were yet to register a shot on target, were awarded a highly dubious free kick, just outside the box, when the referee adjudged the ball to Strike David round on the Arm. Protests were lead by round who clearly showed the ball had in fact struck his chest, but the protests were waved away by the referee. Stockport's number 11 stepped up to take the free kick, which found the bottom corner past a diving Gardner in goal. DCFC continued to press for an equaliser with both Dolan and Evans being thwarted after being put through 1-on-1 by a 'keeper who was quickly off the line to smother the ball. HT 1-0 The second half started pretty much as the 1st with Stockport seeing alot of the ball and passing nicely without troubling the DCFC defence. It was Dolan who had the first chance of the second half taking a free kick on the right after Joe Cartwright had been felled. Steven Mace was lurking for a pass to shoot however, Dolan curled an effort over the wall which the Stockport 'Keeper supurbly saved DCFC continued to rein in shots on the stockport goal with Gresty (who had replaced Dolan) robbing the defender of the ball before hitting a shot which the 'keeper saved. Joe cartwright had a shot saved after juggling the ball on the edge of the 18 yard box and Davison (who had replaced Evans at half time) saw a left foot effoprt again gathered by the stockport 'keeper. A davison corner caused havoc in the stockport box when Joe cartwright and Dolan (who retunred to the fray replacing defender Round) heading on to Gresty who's header finally beat the 'keeper only to be cleared off the line by the Stockport defender. Again Stockport had rarely threatened gardner in goal, however they were awarded a free kick when Watling fouled the stockport right winger. There was a delay in proceedings as the impact had split the football and the teams waiting some 5 mins for a replacment matc-worthy ball to be found. When a ball was found, DCFC had shut off and allowed the free kick (again taken by stockport's No. 11) to avoid everybody in the box and nestle inside the far post without a touch. Stockport claimed it was meant, jay gardner cursed himself and his defence. Stockport should had gone 3-0 up after DCFC pushed forward in search of the goal as a counter-attacked lead the dodgy-haired number 10 to go clear, however, his shot was supurbly pushed onto the bar by Gardner. Stcokport had a further chance when their No.11 rode challenges from mace and Round to shoot on goal, but again gardner was equal to his effort. Andy Evans replaced an injured Andy Holliday with 5 minutes to go, with the formation switching to a bold 4-2-4, but it was left back Auty who had the final chance of the game when his shot from the edge of the 18 yard box was saved by the 'keeper. the game ended 2-0 to Stockport. After the game the stockport manager commented in the good spirit the game was played and the improvments DCFC had made since last year's 9-2 defeat against Stockport. DCFC Manager Andy Holliday came away wondering what could have been had a couple of the numerous shots beat the 'keeper and bemoaned the 1st half free kick. Team 3-5-2 Jay Gardner David Round Steven Mace © Andrew 'the' Wall Robert cartwright Joseph cartwright David Thomson Andy Holliday Danielle di Watling Andrew Evans Ashley Dolan Subs Michael Davison (on 45 for Evans) James O'Neill (on 45 for Thomson) Emile Gresty (on 50 for Dolan) Nathan Auty (on 80 for Watling) DCFC'S NEXT GAME IS AWAY TO BUXTON ON 12TH SEPTEMBER AND THEN AT HOME TO STEVENAGE BOROUGH ON 19TH SEPTEMBER AT CLIFTON DRIVE BEFORE CHESTER CITY TAKE ON STEVENAGE AT THE DEVA -------------------- Defender of the people...
