Evermore frustrated at what passes as the 'debate' in the media and among senior politicians over the in/out shake it all about EU vote, I thought we could do with some clarity based on something we can all understand, music!

The idea (and I really hope this works) is that you take any year between 1973, when the UK joined the EEC, and now. In that year you take one UK band/artist and one European band/artist who realised a single or album in the same year. The European band/artist must be from a country that was actually in the EEC/EU during that year, and any live performance must be from the year itself.

There is no limit to the amount of 'battles' you can have for any given year, but hopefully between now and the 23rd of June referendum date we will have every year covered. Also as this takes us up to current music it wont just be something for the old farts! And while it may be the case that the UK will be assumed to have a lot of advantages in this contest I'm hoping for some surprises, from 70s Krautrock to 80s French Punk and 90s Italian Deep House...

The person who makes the next post in the thread with the next battle will be the one to decide the winner from the previous post/battle.

Right, now the introduction and format is out of the way I'm going to kick the contest off with 1973:

Representing the UK who else but 007 with a little help from Macca: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfU7rUmGDG4

Representing Europe some Dutch prog-rock from Focus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4ouPGGLI6Q

And the winner is...

Anything with McCartney loses, so that's 1-0 Europe for me!

Ok, I'll do 1974 then. Bowie vs Kraftwerk

Other people need to jump in on this, but Kraftwerk for the fact that they were so far ahead of everything else in 1974 with that track.

Which means the current score is UK 0 - EU 2

I'm jumping to 1983 next:

For the UK Orange Juice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESy-Z8vqMrE

And for the EU some sexy Cold War angst from Nena: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=La4Dcd1aUcE

Orange juice wins that battle purely because of Nenas hairy armpits.

1-2 to Europe

Well this thread didn't take off unfortunately, so I will return to 1973 and offer this Dutch master which probably knocks any UK 70's stuff straight out of the reckoning.

Close one but Sham 69 wins that for me, which levels the scores at 2-2.

I'll bring things right up to the present with two 2016 releases.

UK - Bristol's finest trip-hoppers Massive Attack
EU - Madrid all-girl lo-fi rockers Hinds

Two totally different types of music I know, but hey, not a lot's been released yet this year!
