Used last night at Swansea v Notts County. Nothing controversial. To be honest could have done with the scoreboard from Old Trafford cricket ground!! rolleyes.gif

So VAR has just been used to incorrectly rule out a goal the officials on the pitch correctly let stand. The only good thing is it was Man Utd!

Get rid of it! It's a dreadful mess.

Farcical again last night in the Spurs game. A 6-1 win and all anyone is talking about is VAR and refereeing. It's ridiculous!

I think this has to be binned. Football isn't mature enough to be ready for it.

I feel as though it's actually not thar far off working but I agree it's currently a mess.

They seem to be taking way longer than necessary to make pretty straightforward decisions. Its boring for armchair fans and its even worse for those actually at the game. If they cut down on the time taken it's got a chance. If not, it's got no future as you say.

It may improve from a real mess but will never be acceptable because it's fundamentally flawed. It will always primarily involve judgement calls, and that is its biggest problem. TV will love it as it provides controversy and talking points, but a disaster for the fan on the terrace. Referees will use it increasingly because it avoids them being blamed for decisions, and the football will end up as a stop-start mess. Thankfully it will never reach down to the levels I want to watch live.

Also, it makes the role of the linesman/assistant ref all but redundant. He's there primarily to make offside calls, but in this situation, it's better for the ref to let it go unless it's a clear offside and refer it to VAR. It could actually be problematic if the linesman puts his flag up, the ref blows instantly, and VAR reveals it to be onside. It's better for the ref to ignore his linesman's flag, in which case, what's the point in the linesman at all?

One of many intricacies that I don't think people have really thought about.

have to agree, ruling out goals that were given, giving goals that were ruled out, total shambles, perhaps they should use it like tennis and cricket where the team captains get two requests, cant see it working in its current format, I would hate to be at a game where a goal was given then taken away or visa versa

Mixed success at World Cup so far. It's helped with a couple of decisions, but how did the VAR team miss the rugby tackle on Harry Kane in the Tunisia game? crying.gif

Watch the replay. Kane is holding the Tunisian player too.

It can't be a "clear and obvious" penalty if both players are fouling each other.

The Tunisian player wasn’t watching in the direction of the ball just interested in making sure Kane was unable to attempt to go for it

I don't disagree that it was a foul and should've been a penalty, but if both players are tugging each other, the VAR can't tell the ref he made a mistake. You could just as easily give a free kick the other way.

I think some people expect too much from VAR. It's only there for clear wrong decisions, like the penalty in the Sweden v South Korea game. It's still largely down to the ref on the pitch to make the judgement calls on things like shirtpulling and pushing in the box, and he did this pretty poorly.
