Morning folks,

Last week saw the 40th anniversary of Chester's epic League Cup semi-final battle with Aston Villa. To mark the occasion we've trawled the Chronicle archives and found some great photographs from both the Sealand Road and Villa Park clashes in January 1975.

Take a trip down Memory Lane and have a look at some great action images from the two games via our online gallery http://www.chesterchronicle.co.uk/sport/fo...ter-fcs-8538531

Did you go to the game? What were your memories? We would love to hear from you. You can email us at chester.sport@cheshirenews.co.uk or tweet us at our brand new, dedicated Chester FC Twitter account @ChesterFC_Chron.

Have a great day!

They should nearly all be in their 50s now - anyone on here spot themselves or could put names to the boys in pic 6?

Fantastic games with Villa. Unfortunately, we could never quite get to grips with them in the first leg and we were always chasing the game. We did well to get to 2-2 but a winner just wouldn't come.

The away game was much the same, we went 0-2 behind then did fantastically well to get back to 2-2 but the late goal did for us. Even at 2-3, Norman Whitehead had a great chance to equalise when the ball fell to him and he was in lots of space on the RHS of the box with a clear view of goal. Sadly, he half-shot at the far corner of the goal, half passed to the far post and his effort went just wide of the post and just in front of Jesse James (I think) who nearly got to it to turn it in.

The cornerstone of our team, the entire League Cup run, and our first ever promotion that season was the magnificent Trevor Storton. In my opinion our finest player ever by a country mile cityscarf.gif

Great feature from the Chron sports lads . . . light years ahead of the local opposition.

I was there, at the front near the half way line in the paddock. My Dad spent the entire game stood behind me with his arms on the front wall stopping me from getting crushed. Brilliant night and one of the reasons I still follow Chester to this day.

It was an unbelievable season.
Beat league champions Leeds, 3-0 at home in round 3. To see see 19,000 in the ground was awesome.

Drew away at Newcastle 0-0 after the longest train journey, got back to Chester station about 1am and able to pick up newspapers
waiting to go out to shops, with the back pages full of our result, that was just bizzare.

Another 19,000 for the replay which we won 1-0, Malcolm Macdonald never had a look in.

1st leg of the semi-final against Villa, 19,000 gate. Ray Graydon ran us ragged but we came back twice to draw, all to play for.
2nd leg and the wheels definately came off, going two down early on, couldn't quite believe it when we drew level again. That goal from Stuart Mason from outside the area.
Then that little log haired b****r Brian Little scores. Whitehead's miss near the end was a heartbreaker. We did ourselves proud
in front of over 40,000.

Then not to forget Chester fans outnumbering Southport and Lincoln supporters at Haig Avenue. Chester had played their last game and in the last promotion spot.
Southport had to win to prevent Lincon leapfrogging us. Southport go 3-0 up (I think), then Lincoln get two back. It felt similar to when we were at Garforth.
Southport hang on to win and send us up and we get our first ever promotion.

Our first three seasons as Chester FC were incredible but that season easily matched it

40 years ago, seems like just yesterday!

Love that picture with the packed kop in the background.

If ever there was a reminder of the potential Sealand Rd had that is it. There was room for a huge stand on there. On the main stand side after the stand was replaced there was room for a 3,000 capacity terrace in front of the stand and even room to move the pitch across a few yards to expand the popular side. Even with today's stringent regulations Sealand Rd could have comfortably been evolved into a modern 12,000 capacity stadium.

I really miss the old girl and those photos make it even more raw.

Thanks Barnes you ****!

Footage of the game at Villa Park would be nice . I remember Stuart Masons goal being a volley from outside the box . Is my memory correct or am I having another senior moment ?
