Forgive me but I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to football clubs and history, put the two together and I'm almost off the scale of nerdishness so can anyone help me - who are Vauxhall motors exactly?

I assume they were a simple works team when the factory was built in the 1960's but what about now?
Are they owned by the company, part owned, completely independent of them?
Do the company make 'donations' to the club, do the company own the ground?
If they are now independent of the company why not rename themselves 'Ellesmere Port united' or something, if still owned by the company what's stopping them buying their way into the football league?

I looked at their website but it didn't say much

If anyone knows [or cares] i would appreciate your help, whoever they are good luck to them as it seems they put on a good evening yesterday judged by what I've read on DC.

Thanks if you can help, now where's my new anorak?.........

They started as the works team and played many years in the West Cheshire League with the mighty Cammell Lairds, Poulton Victoria, Willaston and Upton AA. They played their way through the North West Counties and old Unibond leagues to reach this level, their highest place in the pyramid. As far as I recall the only affiliation to the old motor firm is the dealership shirt sponsorship. I think the current ground stands on land that may still be owned by the car plant but they certainly don't have anything to go with General Motors who own the Vauxhall name.
They changed their club crest this season to include the town name of Ellesmere Port. That's all I know from living up the road from Rivacre for a long time!

That reminds me of a fun evening watching them beat QPR (then managed by Ian Holloway) in the FA Cup. A few Chester fans went along to cheer on Danny Collins, then on loan at Vauxhalls:

QPR v Vauxhall Motors

The Vauxhalls fans were chanting: "You're s***e and you're QPR!".

They had a cracking little team back then.

Terry Fearns seems to have had the liveliest career after that - Telford, Southport, Chorley and Skem.....When they let him out to play

Their club shop wasn't very good. Never had any front brake pads for a 1974 Viva HC. Disappointing.

Since Dave Edmunds left GM there was a parting of the ways and really they are only Vauxhall motors in name now.
The company sports and social club and the ground are on land owned by GM and the company do get a nice bit of advertising and such like through
the club and in return have helped out with coaches and driver for away travel.
In fact they leased one of the Euro 96 buses to the old CCFC for a few away trips but never got paid for it by a certain somebody.
