Thursday 18th July saw the SB's head off in pleasant conditions to Llanberis in North Wales to visit the hydroelectric power station known as Electric Mountain. There were too many SB's to fit onto one tour, so we were split into three groups, touring at 11.00, 11.30 and noon. The tour starts with a short film explaining the history of the plant and showing an overview of what it does. Then the tour moves onto a mini-bus which takes you into the mountain following a quick stop to deposit bags, cameras, phones etc into a locker, no pics allowed underground.

Under the mountain there are 10 miles of roads cut into the mountain, together with some of the largest underground caverns in Europe. Just being driven in, it's amazing to see the size of the complex, the roads even have traffic lights on them! First stop is the inlet valve cavern. The water arrives here in 6 vertical pipes from the lake 500m above and there are huge ball valves to control the rate of flow. The ball valves are just like ordinary plumbing ball valves except they're bigger than an elephant. The valves are protected by an amazing suspended roof which we're told was designed by TV's Carol Vorderman when she worked there as a civil engineer when she was just 18. Next is the turbine room where the water drives huge turbines to produce the juice. Then it's on to the generator cavern which is huge, protected from falling rocks and water by another Carol Vorderman roof. Then it's back on the bus and a return to daylight.

After all 3 groups had seen the mountain we moved on to the National Slate Museum and spent a couple of hours there before returning to Chester. The day was blessed with good weather, SB's do seem to be lucky in that respect.

As we're halfway through July, a quick reminder that the first Senior Blue meeting of the season will be on Friday, 2nd August at 11.00am. It costs just £5 to join for the season.

On match days ... we ALL play!
