I'm really pleased that the verdict has been served that exonerates the fans and places the blame where everyone knew it lay. The West Yorkshire Police need to hang their heads in shame. I also remember the S*n and what they claimed, particularly their scumbag editor, whose name escapes me. Perhaps the police can begin to make amends by recognising that the overwhelming amount of football fans are decent people who just want to follow their team. This result indicates to me that the police rather than being the solution are part of the problem. I hope that all the people that lost loved ones can move on knowing that the real culprits may belatedly face justice.

Kelvin McKensie was the Sun editor responsible for those deplorable comments. I still cringe every time they wheel him out to give his very vocal views on all sorts of issues. Can rant on all sort of topics and never short of an opinion.

That's him .... doesn't he own Talksport now.

He was forced to issue a public apology, but it was not sincere.

I hope someone reminds him of this verdict.

Interesting comment on the news regards the exoneration of the fans and the Taylor report ... not sure whether this will have an impact on safe standing in the football league.

Great post Shunter
Its been an incredible journey for the families. Yes justice for the 96, but as a society there are real questions to be asked about why it took 27 years to expose the lies and negligence.
All Liverpool fans can hold their heads up high tonight. They always knew the truth.

The Scum newspaper should never be forgiven for the horrible and deliberate lies that it spread about dead football fans because it thought at the time they couldn't defend themselves. Little did the Scum know that a whole city, both red and blue, made sure that these innocents were not only defended, but the lies spread about them, from the police, right-wing media and the Thatcher government were not allowed to stand. Those like Kelvin McKenzie and Boris Johnson if they had any shred of humanity would retire now from public life and never write another media article again. Those in charge of the West Yorkshire police responsible for both the deaths and the cover up that followed should be prosecuted. And the government papers that are due to remain closed until 2018 should be finally opened and the dirty and disgusting role of Thatcher government ministers and advisers like Bernard Ingram should be exposed for what it was.

At the same time those police officers that not only did their best on the day with no leadership, but then put their careers on the line by exposing the lies and cover-up of their superiors should be praised as true heroes as it was their actions that helped not only injured fans on the day but the memory of the dead afterwards. Like the role of the police during the miners strike, and particularly the lies and conspiracy around Orgreave , the role of the state against working class people has been exposed here for what it was, but it doesn't end here. At the same time the Scum has been shown for the lying rag it is it continues to act in exactly the same way - now it is previously Tory voting junior doctors that are the 'enemy within' rather than miners - different lies, same game. Never forgive, never forget.

Good post Captain.

I also sincerely hope that the senior police officer who convened a meeting and said we'll blame it on the fans (as exposed by another officer) faces justice. This officer is of the same calibre of officer as those that used to call at Jimmy Saville's flat on a Saturday morning for coffee and were part of the sinister crowd that covered for him and prevented his prosecution.

Never a truer word spoken. It is very obvious that police have not got a clue how to police a football crowd. They need to punish wrongdoers and NOT tar the 99% of us with the 'hooligan' brush. This is exactly what happened at Hillsborough. Instead of using common sense and instructing that the kick off be put back 30 mins THEN RELAYING THIS FACT TO THE FANS STILL WAITING TO GET IN..thus ensuring that they understand that they would not miss the kick off. They caused 96 deaths by just opening the gates without making sure it was safe to do so.

My response to your post Waggoner is that I hope David Dukinfield receives his just rewards and faces a long prison not for his incompetence, but for his lies and part in the cover up.

Nail on the head there, Captain. The Super Soaraway Scum is no friend of working people, merely a tool used by the 1% to maintain the status quo by spreading lmisinformation and creating divisions in society.

It must have been horrific for the families to lose loved ones in such awful and tragic circumstances only then have that compounded by the lies and hatred that they had to read about them.

Justice indeed, but for many too late.

At last some justice for those families.

Now hopefully every scumbag politician, copper and journalist who repeated lies or assisted the cover-up will be publicly taken down one by one.

Why isn't Kelvin Mackenzie in prison?

Incited hatred and slanderous lies on a mass scale. It's a disgrace that he is today quoted as saying he also felt he'd been 'caught up' in the tragedy.

I live in Liverpool and I know the self-pity city rhetoric is used a lot, but you can't help but admire the way this issue has never been let to slip into the past. They've fought their corner and uncovered something that is beyond deplorable.

I am not a Liverpool fan, never have been, never will be, but I congratulate them on the outcome of the inquiry today and for the way they have refused to bow to pressure from the Police, the papers, the government. I applaud your determination to get the truth, most would have given up long ago, sadly some of your main activists didn't live long enough to hear the verdict. 27 Years to get to this- it's a disgrace, an absolute national disgrace. It shames the Tory government under Thatcher, her cronies in the Press and the criminal actions of the South Yorkshire Police. The verdict is a start, prosecutions MUST follow. Too late to nail Thatcher, she's gone to stay with Satan but her accomplices should be dragged from their mansions and put on trial, the Police too- a crime is a crime and it's even worse when those we put in charge of law and order treat it with such contempt. As for the Sun... it should be fined so heavily that it shuts down just like rags before it. Its a disgusting piece of sh1t at the best of times.
Nobody has come out winners, Liverpool lost 96 of it's own and eventually proven that it was NOT their fault. I had some genuine sympathy for the officer in charge who made the decision to open the gate- he had a decision to make as people were crushing outside- he had to make a decision quickly - he got it wrong, incompetence but no intent to harm. What makes the whole thing so disgusting is what followed and the cover up. Statements altered, lie after lie, fans penned in and the front gates kept locked to stop them escaping, police dogs sent to that end of the ground instead of ambulances and the fans left carrying the injured on advertising hoardings while the police looked on; disgusting lies in the Sun trying to discredit the Liverpool fans (they would be socialists after all) and government after government dragging their feet over an inquiry.

RIP the 96 from all decent football fans everywhere. Now for justice
