Ok there's been far too much doom and gloom on here lately, who's up for a bit of fun?

They used to run a Competition on a forum I used to frequent for the FA Cup. The general idea is that people get drawn against each other just like the FA Cup and each particpant chooses defences and strikers that are taking part in the Cup that day. You basically have a budget so you have to choose some lower ranked teams and players and you score points for goals your selections score and concede etc. It sounds a bit complicated but it is quite straightforward when you get the hang of it and it is good fun.

If enough people are interested i'll run it. The Cup starts this weekend so post your entries here and we'll see how we go. I may have to cap it at 32 (or 64 if we get a load) to make it a bit simpler, let's just see who is interested for now.

I'll offer a prize for the winner, to be decided wink.gif

Post your thoughts and/or entries below.

Well such an overwhelming response smile.gif

Well here are the general rules to give you a better idea of what it is all about. If we get at least 16 entries i'll run it, if not no worries i'll not bother. Up to you guys, who's gonna start us off and enter?

RULES

1. You each have £20
2. Select 3 defences from teams playing in available matches in round 1 of the FA Cup. If you are drawn at home you must select defences of teams playing at home, and if drawn away teams playing away. League One teams cost £3, League Two teams cost £2, Conference teams cost £1, and non-league (excl. Conference) cost 50p. The goals conceded by your defences count for your opponent.
3. Select 7 outfield players. As above, players from League One cost £3, League Two £2, Conference £1 and non-league 50p. Each goal scored by one of your players counts for you. There is no home/away rule for outfield players.
4. You will be drawn against another board regular in a random knock out draw.
5. The tie will be scored as follows: You get: your goals scored plus opponents goals conceded. Your opponent gets his or her goals scored plus your goals conceded.
6. If you have both selected the same outfield player then they cancel each other out and neither will score.
7. The winner proceeds to the next round.
8. In the event of a tie the process will be repeated using the replay matches. A 'penalty' tiebreaker (in the form of guess the attendance at a specified match) will separate teams still level.
9. Available matches are those played over the weekend set aside for cup ties (Fri to Sun). In the event of a postponement you will concede one goal for a defence picked and score nothing for an outfield player.
10. Invalid defences will concede two goals
11. The deadline for picking teams will be 7.30pm on the Friday of the weekend of the matches if you want to select any of the teams playing on Friday night, or 12 noon Saturday if not.
12. Round 2 will involve picking new teams on similar criteria.

It can seem a bit complicated but it's not really. I'll post an example later which should clarify things.

I'll have a go too. I guess that given Rule 2, you make the draw before you pick your defences?

Yeah I'm in, we now have 18 so let's see of we can get to 32. I need to do the draw and give everyone time to do their teams etc, so we'll put a closing time of 1pm tomorrow. If we don't get the full 32 we'll have a prelim round and the rest can play friendlies so they still get an idea of how it all works.

I'm rammed just now but will post an example ASAP.

Ok here's a hypothetical example. Basically the idea is to pick strikers you think will score and a defence that you feel won't concede too many. The gamble is whether or not to use most your budget on a solid defence or go all out attack. You have to pick a few lower ranked teams/players to stay within budget.

So let's say round one RON SEAL is drawn against GARY THE GOAT

RON SEAL'S TEAM

I am drawn at HOME so i can ONLY pick home defences.
I can pick ANY outfield players, home or away.

Defence:
Gillingham £3
Boreham Wood 50p
St Albans City 50p

£4

Outfield:
John Smith (Gillingham) £3
Mark Jones (Leyton Orient) £3
Ian Wilson (Peterborough) £3
Jeff Williams (Fleetwood) £2
Barry Owen (Southend) £2
Derek Simpson (Scunthorpe) £2
Bill Eysquibble (Kidderminster) £1

£16

Total £20

GARY THE GOAT'S TEAM

The goat is drawn at AWAY so i can ONLY pick away defences.
I can pick ANY outfield players, home or away.

Defence:
Tranmere £3
Carlisle £3
Swindon £3

£9

Outfield:
John Jones (Notts County) £3
Donald Sheldon (Leyton Orient) £3
Seth Ogden (Hartlepool) £2
Sam Sims (Welling Inited) £1
Alan Evans (Macclesfield) £1
Bob Owen (Corby Town) 50p
Dirk Diggler (Biggleswade Town) 50p

£11

Total £20

Note: You may not go over your £20 budget but it's fine to go under, doesn't have to be exactly £20.

Ok so looking at the example above. Let's say over the weekend my defence concedes the following.

Gillingham - concede 0
Boreham Wood - concede 1
St Albans - concede 2

My defence has conceded 3 goals in total so these score for my opponent, Gary the Goat!

Gary's strikers score 4 goals in total so his total score is 7.

4 goals scored + 3 goals conceded by opponent = 7

Gary's defences concede:

Tranmere - concede 2
Carlisle - concede 1
Swindon - concede 2

My strikers score 6 goals in total.

6 goals score + 5 conceded by my opponent = 11

So the final score would be...

RON SEAL 11
GARY THE GOAT 7

So Ron Seal proceeds to the next round.

Does this all make sense?
